Today I want to talk about our environment. This is an all encompassing subject. I want to talk about both your physical environment (i.e. your home, your office, the places you spend your time) as well as your social environment that you place yourself in.
According to PositivePsychology.com:
“What is the Definition of Environmental Psychology?
According to the Journal of Environmental Psychology, the field can be defined as:
“[T]he scientific study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their physical surroundings (including built and natural environments, the use and abuse of nature and natural resources, and sustainability-related behavior).”https://positivepsychology.com/environmental-psychology/
“In other words, environmental psychology is all about the interplay between people and their environment.“
One of the things that was hard to learn in my road to recovery from my addiction was that I had to limit my contact with people and influences that would drain my energy. Every single person on the Earth today carries an energy with them. There is an actual electrical charge that can be measured that exudes at least 3 feet from a person’s body.
Check out more about that here: https://www.graduate.umaryland.edu/gsa/gazette/February-2016/How-the-human-body-uses-electricity/
This was an ahah moment for me. Because I could remember throughout my life those type of people that would just zap your energy. When you interacted with them, your energy would be completely drained. While there were other people who would actually charge you up.
I have made it a goal in my life to spend more time with people who build my own energy and electrical charge. I think that is why I love reading books about successful business people. Right now I am reading Alicia Keys book “More Myself”. Hot damn man. She is powerful. She is a light to this world and I want to be exposed to more of her work and what she contributes to us all.
Think about it for a second. Why do you think Oprah and Tony Robbins are so wealthy and successful. It is because they have provided knowledge that empowers people. They were only lifted by lifting others.
Mel Robbins a while back posted on her Instagram feed: “Family is Family”. But she crossed off the second family and had written: “Still have to treat me like a human being”. My point here is that sometimes you have to play the gatekeeper to your own energy and well-being. Sometimes you have to deny people entrance into your environment to protect yourself from negative energy that leads to negative thoughts, that leads you down the dark tornado cycle of addiction.
Sometimes addictions are not our fault. We are caught up in them before we knew any better. However, it is your sole responsibility to bring yourself out of the darkness. Sometimes that includes making really difficult decisions like limiting time with family, or close friends that you grew up with.
Our physical environment is going to be even more important now with #Covid-19. Check out what Harvard Business School wrote about that here:
